The Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback job was Matt Cassel’s to lose, and he apparently did enough to ensure he’ll be under center when the regular season begins.
FOX Sports NFL reporter Jay Glazer reported Monday morning that Vikings players were informed that Cassel would be the starting quarterback when Minnesota opens its season on Sept. 7 against the St. Louis Rams.
Cassel beat out rookie QB Teddy Bridgewater, who the Vikings selected with the 32nd pick in this spring’s NFL draft.
Cassel has been solid in the preseason so far for the Vikings, who have won all three of their preseason games. The former New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has completed 67 percent of his passes (26 of 39) while throwing for two touchdowns and an interception in the preseason. Cassel also has added 34 yards on four rushes.
Bridgewater also has been very good in the most recent couple of games. The Louisville product is 26 of 40 with four touchdowns and no picks, including going 20 for 27 for 217 yards and all four of those scores in his last two games.
