FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots’ backup quarterback was back on the practice field Tuesday.

Ryan Mallett returned to practice after missing two consecutive training camp sessions following Thursday night’s preseason-opening loss to the Washington Redskins. Cornerback Brandon Browner also was back at practice after missing Monday’s session.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo was absent for his first practice of Patriots training camp after missing 10 games last season with a torn pectoral.

Running back Tyler Gaffney, tight ends D.J. Williams and Michael Hoomanawanui, linebacker Cameron Gordon, center Bryan Stork, offensive lineman Chris Martin, wide receiver Jeremy Gallon and defensive tackles Chris Jones and Sealver Siliga did not practice. Linebacker Ja’Gared Davis and safety Tavon Wilson were present but not wearing pads.

Wide receiver Aaron Dobson and defensive tackle Dominique Easley were on the practice field for the second consecutive day. They were in full pads with the rest of the Patriots but left to work with trainers on the lower practice field an hour into practice.
