Tony Gonzalez: ‘Probably No Chance’ Of Returning To NFL Despite Offers

Future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez plans on staying retired — probably.

The tight end, who called it a career this past winter after 17 NFL seasons, said Thursday that it’s unlikely he’ll strap the pads back on for one last shot at Super Bowl ring. He did not rule out the possibility entirely, though.

“There is probably no chance of me coming back to play,” Gonzalez said, via CBSSports.com. “I don’t want to play anymore, to tell you the truth. I’ve had my fill.”

So you’re telling me there’s a chance?

Gonzalez said he has been contacted by interested teams this offseason, though he declined to say which ones. He was asked specifically Thursday about the prospect of joining the New England Patriots, who have both Super Bowl aspirations and an extreme lack of depth at the tight end position.

It would be a treat to see how Gonzalez operates with quarterback Tom Brady, but it seems that Bill Belichick & Co. might have missed their chance.

“If it didn’t happen up to this point,” Gonzalez said, “it’s not going to happen now.”

Since retiring, the 38-year-old has begun work as an NFL analyst for CBS.
