Celtics Hire Leon Powe For ‘Whatever Danny (Ainge) Wants Me To Do’

Leon Powe is back in Boston, but he’s trading in his jersey for a suit.

Powe has been hired by the Celtics to work in their front office doing “whatever Danny (Ainge) wants me to do,” he told the Boston Herald’s Mark Murphy on Monday. CSNNE’s A. Sherrod Blakely added that Powe will work in a “community/player related position.”

The 30-year-old former power forward began his NBA career with the Celtics in 2006 and spent just three full seasons in Boston, although he made his presence felt. He served as a valuable spark off the bench behind Kevin Garnett during the team’s championship run in 2007-08, capping it off by scoring 21 points in Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Powe signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009 but battled injuries and last played in the NBA in 2010-11 with the Memphis Grizzlies.

According to Scott Souza of the MetroWest Daily News, it looks like Powe might use this opportunity as a stepping stone to pursue a career in coaching.

Either way, the fan favorite definitely will be a welcome sight in Boston.
