In a statement on its website, the NCAA wrote Monday, “Due to Penn State University’s significant progress toward ensuring its athletics department functions with integrity, the NCAA Executive Committee today eliminated the school’s postseason ban, effective immediately, and will return the full complement of football scholarships in 2015-16.”
Penn State was severely penalized in 2011 for a lack of institutional control after a scandal erupted surrounding assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s sexual assault of at least eight underage boys on university property. Along with the postseason and scholarship bans, victories from 1998 to 2011 were vacated and the university was fined $60 million.
