The New York Jets head coach has been taking a lot of flak, whether it’s for his team’s abysmal 1-4 record or his decision to start quarterback Geno Smith in Week 6 after he missed a meeting before the team’s 31-0 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. But Ryan defended his quarterback and said he believes it’s only a matter of time before the Jets bounce back.
“I see the things that a lot of fans and people outside this building don’t see,” Ryan told ESPN New York radio’s Michael Kay on Tuesday. “I see the work ethic. I see when (Smith is) in here at 8 o’clock in the morning on his day off and bringing like six or seven guys with him. I see those types of things when others don’t.”
Still, Ryan knows that if things don’t improve in New York, then he’s the one who will get the boot.
“If that’s the case, and we don’t get this thing on the right track, I don’t think for a minute I’ll be here,” Ryan said. “No, I know I won’t. But, I believe that this team is going to right itself, and we’ll find a way. I believe that.”
“This team is going to be far from an embarrassment when the season is over,” Ryan added. “That’s how I feel.”
Ryan and the Jets will have a tough time bouncing back this week, however, as they’re set to face Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
