Agent: Cuban Outfielder Yasmany Tomas Had Private Workout With Red Sox

Could the Boston Red Sox look to add a third Cuban outfielder?

The Red Sox hosted a private workout for Yasmany Tomas, according to the slugger’s agent, Jay Alou. The workout took place Sunday at the Red Sox Academy in the Dominican Republic.

The Red Sox already have a surplus of outfielders, including fellow Cuban defectors Yoenis Cespedes and Rusney Castillo. Cespedes, of course, was acquired from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for pitcher Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes at the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline, while Castillo signed a seven-year, $72.5 million contract with Boston in August.

It seems unlikely the Red Sox will aggressively pursue Tomas. The Red Sox’s private workout for the 23-year-old was executed partly out of convenience, a major league source told WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford. Tomas reportedly needed a place in the area to continue his preparation.

Tomas’ biggest asset is believed to be his power. It’s been speculated that the right-handed-hitting outfielder could land a contract in excess of $100 million in free agency this offseason.

Tomas hosted a showcase in September in the Dominican Republic. The Red Sox were among the teams in attendance.
