Seahawks’ Chris Matthews Ties Super Bowl On TD Just Before Half (GIF)

The Seattle Seahawks took a bold gamble at the end of the first half of Super Bowl XLIX, but a virtual no-name made it pay off.

The Seahawks trailed the Patriots by seven points Sunday night with just six seconds left in the second quarter and had a decision to make with the ball at New England’s 11-yard line: Go for the touchdown or settle for the field-goal try?

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll decided to go for it, and quarterback Russell Wilson fired a laser to wide receiver Chris Matthews for the TD to tie the score at 14.

If you’ve never heard of Matthews before, don’t worry. The 25-year-old entered the game with zero catches in his NFL career.

Matthews made his presence felt Sunday, though, hauling in a beautiful 44-yard pass earlier in the quarter for his first NFL catch before hitting paydirt on his second grab.
