Bill Belichick References ‘Do Your Job’ In 2003 New York Times Opinion Piece

Bill Belichick has been pushing the “Do Your Job” manta for a long time.

The New England Patriots head coach wrote an opinion piece for The New York Times in 2003 with 37 thoughts, pieces of advice and reminders to Super Bowl XXXVII head coaches Jon Gruden and Bill Callahan. Belichick was only one year removed from winning Super Bowl XXXVI, his first with the Patriots.

Belichick’s 34th thought will sound familiar to fans and followers of the Super Bowl XLIX champion Patriots.

“XXXIV. You’ll do your job because you know in about five minutes you’re right back in the pack with the other 31 of us,” Belichick wrote.

Belichick has won three Super Bowls since he penned this piece, but it illustrates how the coach might be feeling less than two months removed from winning another title, and it gives an interesting glimpse into what the coach would never say in a news conference.
