The goal Tarek Elrich scored Saturday was so good, it’s making headlines not only down under but also up above and everywhere in between.
Elrich scored a goal of the year contender for Adelaide United in its 4-1 win over Melbourne City in Australia’s A-League (first division). Elrich scored after embarking on a stunning 75-yard solo dribble, which started well inside his own half and ended in a much-deserved celebration.
Adelaide United already was leading 2-0 when Elrich took off with the ball. The Adelaide fullback turned attacker, dribbling through a host of opposing players before beating goalkeeper Tando Velaphi with a composed finish.
Most agree Elrich’s goal might contend for the 2015 FIFA’s Puskas Award (for best goal of the year) when the winner is announced early next year. Others are calling it the best goal scored in the A-League since the competition started in 2005.
Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich calls on fans around the soccer world to appreciate Elrich’s goal fully, according to FOX Sports Australia.
“For me, Tarek Elrich goal (is the) goal of the season,” Bosnich said. “If that was someone in any of the big European leagues, we’d be hailing it for two or three weeks.”
Let the hailing begin.
