British Open Rain Delay Makes For Wet, Wild Scene At St. Andrews (Photos)

British Open rain delayThe first round of the 144th British Open went off without a hitch Thursday.

The same can’t be said for Day 2.

Heavy downpours at theĀ Old Course at St. Andrews early Friday morning delayed play for several hours, as the grounds crew worked to remove substantial amounts of rain from the fairways.

Play was stopped just 14 minutes after the first group teed off in a delay that would last three hours and 14 minutes before golfers returned to the course at 10:10 a.m. local time.

The inclementĀ weather, combined with strong winds, created quite a drearyĀ scene at the Scotland course, as members of the grounds crew needed squeegees to eliminate large puddles that had formed throughout the course.

While not ideal for the golfers, the rough conditions helped produce some striking photos. Check out some of the best shots below.
