The Boston Red Sox took the field Tuesday night in Miami without one rather important member of their team: their manager, John Farrell.
“This was something that came up, reared its head on Friday,” Farrell explained to reporters, via ESPN.com. “After some tests on Saturday, it was determined that it needed to be taken care of Monday morning. Overnight in the hospital, I come down here.
Farrell said he might have suffered the injury while moving an equipment bag after Thursday’s loss to the New York Yankees.
“Any kind of rotational burst or movement is what typically causes it,” the skipper told reporters. “Seems to be the culprit, late Thursday night.”
The Red Sox also were without left fielder Hanley Ramirez, who has not played since fouling a pitch off his foot last Friday. Farrell told reporters he hopes to see Ramirez back in the lineup Wednesday.
