The NFL reportedly is coming down hard on Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith.
The league has suspended Smith for one year, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, following the linebacker’s Aug. 6 arrest for an alleged hit-and-run involving DUI and vandalism charges in Santa Clara, Calif. NFL Media’s Rand Getlin cited substance abuse as the reason for the suspension.
The former San Francisco 49er also was suspended for the first nine games in 2014 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies. The 49ers released Smith, 25, back in August after his latest arrest.
Oakland took a chance on Smith and signed him to a one-year deal before the start of the season. He has recorded 3.5 sacks and 28 combined tackles in nine games for the Raiders.
