The New England Patriots put in some work for the 2016 season Tuesday, working out CFL defensive linemen Freddie Bishop and Cleyon Laing, according to a source.
Bishop, a Western Michigan product, recorded 11 sacks with 45 tackles with the Calgary Stampeders in 2015. Bishop, who’s listed at 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, briefly was with the Detroit Lions after going undrafted in 2013. He was signed by the Lions May 14, 2013 and released a month later.
Bishop ran a 4.88-second 40-yard dash at his Pro Day in 2013 with a 7.42-second 3-cone, 4.52-second short shuttle, 37.5-inch vertical leap and 9-foot, 9-inch broad jump.
Laing, who went to Iowa State, had nine sacks with 41 tackles with the Toronto Argonauts. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive lineman was selected in the second round of the 2013 CFL Draft.
Laing ran a 5.09-second 40-yard dash at his Pro Day in 2013 with a 7.51-second 3-cone, 4.65-second short shuttle, 31.5-inch vertical leap and 9-foot, 6-inch broad jump.
Bishop and Laing wouldn’t be eligible to play for the Patriots this season, but they could be signed once the season is over.
The Patriots signed former CFL defensive linemen Jason Vega and Armond Armstead in 2013. Neither played in a regular season game with the Patriots.
