Report: Dan Campbell Leaving Dolphins After Adam Gase Named Head Coach

The next chapter of Dan Campbell’s career won’t come as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Apparently, it won’t even come with the Dolphins at all.

After hiring former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase as their new head coach Saturday, the Dolphins have informed Campbell of his release from the franchise, a source told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday.

Campbell reportedly is looking for other coaching opportunities elsewhere.

The 39-year-old served as the Dolphins’ tight ends coach from 2011 until midway through the 2015 season, when Miami fired Joe Philbin after the team’s Week 4 loss. Campbell took over as interim head coach and led the team to back-to-back wins over the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans.

Yet the former NFL tight end couldn’t sustain that success, as the Dolphins lost 7 of their last 10 games to finish 6-10.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross admitted after the team hired Gase that he hoped Campbell would remain in the organization, but added the decision regarding Campbell’s future would be up to Gase.
