Mike Aviles is going into spring training this season a much happier man.
The Detroit Tigers utility man revealed that his 5-year-old daughter, Adriana, is cancer-free after receiving a bone marrow transplant, per MLB.com’s Jason Beck. Adriana was diagnosed with leukemia last season, and Aviles spent a lot of time off the field to be with her.
Aviles was with the Cleveland Indians in 2015, and the team supported him through the whole ordeal. His teammates shaved their heads to show solidarity with Adriana, and the Indians refused to trade him at last season’s non-waiver trade deadline so he wouldn’t have to move.
It’s great news for Aviles, who played for the Red Sox for two seasons and was part of the transaction that brought manager John Farrell to Boston.
