‘Spotlight,’ Film About Boston Globe, Wins Best Picture At 2016 Oscars

Boston-based film “Spotlight” was the big winner Sunday night at the 88th Academy Awards.

“Spotlight,” which features Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci, took home the Oscar for Best Picture. Keaton, who also starred in last year’s best picture winner, “Birdman,” was pretty happy with the choice.

“Spotlight” is a true story about a group of Boston Globe journalists who revealed sexual abuse by priests in the Catholic Church.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Best Actor) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Best Director) were honored for their work on “The Revenant,” which many considered to be the favorite for Best Picture. Brie Larson won Best Actress for her performance in “Room.”
