The Brooklyn Nets might never live this down.
The Nets, as we all know, were victims of one of the most lopsided trades in recent NBA history in 2013, when then-general manager Billy King sent the Boston Celtics an incredible three future first-round picks (in 2014, 2016 and 2018) — as well as the right to swap first-rounders in 2017 — just to acquire aging veterans Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.
The Celtics still are reaping the benefits from that deal, as they’ll enter the 2016 offseason armed with Brooklyn’s first-round lottery pick and loads of young talent. So, seeing as Friday was April Fools’ Day and there’s never a bad time to poke fun at a team from New York, the Celtics decided to have a little fun by adding a new item to their online store.
Notice that fine hooded sweatshirt on the left? Yes, the Celtics’ official online store is selling Nets gear — in its “Clearance” section, no less. Here’s a closer look at the threads, which apparently already have sold out.
We don’t blame Celtics fans for clamoring to buy Brooklyn gear, as the team’s trade with Boston has played a crucial role in the C’s rise to prominence. But this still is another cruel blow for Nets fans, whose team is enduring another brutal season and doesn’t have much hope for the future.
Now that’s no joke.
