Free Agent Dwight Freeney Open To Joining Patriots: ‘Both Sides Would Win’
If the New England Patriots were to give Dwight Freeney a call, he certainly wouldn’t object to that.
The 36-year-old veteran pass rusher wants to continue to play in the NFL this season, and despite the fact his former Cardinals acquired Chandler Jones from the Pats, Freeney told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King he’d like to stay with Arizona. But the Bloomfield, Conn., native would be open to returning home to New England.
“That’s hard to fathom,” Freeney told King. “But I’m not against (Patriots head coach) Bill (Belichick). I understand the dynamic involved, but at the end of the day, this is a business. My first allegiance right now is to Arizona, if they’re interested. But if it happened that I ended up in New England, I can tell you, both sides would win.”
At 36, Freeney is considered pretty ancient in football years. But he told King he still feels great.
“I mean, nothing hurts,” Freeney said. “I consider myself an anomaly. How I eat, how I train — that’s the reason why I know I can still play at a high level for another year.”
Freeney had eight sacks with the Cardinals in 2015 and has amassed 119.5 in his career for the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers, also.
