Patriots Release Linebacker Tony Steward After Less Than Three Weeks

FOXBORO, Mass. — Tony Steward, we hardly knew ye.

The New England Patriots released Steward, a linebacker, after less than three weeks with the team. The Patriots signed the Buffalo Bills 2015 sixth-round draft pick April 22.

The move leaves the Patriots with one open spot on their 90-man roster, which wasn’t filled by the time the NFL transaction wire was filed Wednesday.

The Patriots selected two linebackers in the 2016 NFL Draft after signing Steward — Eastern Illinois’ Kamu Grugier-Hill and Houston’s Elandon Roberts. They also signed undrafted free agent C.J. Johnson, an Ole Miss product.

The Patriots have veteran linebackers Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Shea McClellin, Jonathan Freeny, Ramon Humber and Kevin Snyder on their 90-man roster.
