Boston Red Sox fans probably didn’t know Ron Kulpa’s name before Friday night’s game against the New York Yankees, but they were fully aware of it by the end of the ninth inning.
The Sox had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth frame and Big Papi at the plate. With a 3-1 count, he took a borderline pitch for a strike and was not happy with Kulpa’s call. Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to get Papi away from Kulpa so he wouldn’t get ejected, but Farrell ended up being tossed.

Ortiz struck out looking on the next pitch, which wasn’t even close to the strike zone. He was ejected soon after for arguing balls and strikes.

The Red Sox wound up losing 3-2. The series continues Saturday afternoon.
