Things keep going from bad to worse for the New York Yankees.

The last-place Yankees on Friday announced pitcher CC Sabathia is heading to the disabled list with a left groin strain. New York called up veteran left-handed pitcher Phil Coke from Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.

Sabathia, who cut his 2015 season short with the shocking announcement he needed to go to rehab for a drinking problem, has done an adequate job for the Bombers this season. The 35-year-old has a 2-2 record with a 3.81 ERA in five starts this season, striking out 21 in 28 1/3 innings pitched.

Sabathia also missed time in 2012 with a left groin injury.

Coke, 32, appeared in 15 games last season in stints with the Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays. Primarily used as a reliever during his big league career, one of Coke’s two appearances this season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was a start. Coke went five scoreless innings on May 29. He’s made two appearances this season, tossing seven scoreless frames.

The Yankees, who have lost eight of their last 10, open a three-game series this weekend with the first-place Boston Red Sox. New York enters the weekend seven games back in the American League East.
