The Colorado Rockies cut ties with their highest-paid player Wednesday, designating shortstop Jose Reyes for assignment after reinstating him from the restricted list.
Reyes, who earned four All-Star selections and a National League batting title during his time with the New York Mets, has yet to appear in a game for Colorado this season. He was suspended through May 31 after being arrested on domestic violence charges last October and was nine games into a Triple-A rehab stint when he was DFA’d.
The Rockies now have 10 days to either trade, release or waive Reyes, who is set to make $22 million in each of the next two seasons.
After leaving New York in 2011, Reyes spent one season with the Miami Marlins and two-plus seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays before joining the Rockies ahead of last year’s trade deadline.
