Patriots Waive Michael Williams As Precursor To Placing Tight End On IR

The New England Patriots waived tight end Michael Williams with the intention of placing him on injured reserve Friday.

If Williams clears waivers Monday, he will revert to the Patriots’ season-ending injured reserve list. Williams reportedly tore his ACL Wednesday during Patriots minicamp. Williams walked around the field after the non-contact injury but was carted back to the stadium.

If another team claims Williams, they would have to store him on their 90-man roster until the end of training camp

Williams caught three passes for 26 yards in 15 games last season. The Patriots traded a 2017 seventh-round pick to the Detroit Lions for Williams last August.

Williams played tight end at Alabama then was converted to offensive tackle with the Lions before moving back to his college position with the Patriots. He mostly was used as a blocker in New England.
