Celtics Rookie Jaylen Brown Narrowly Avoids Scary-Looking Knee Injury

The Boston Celtics’ top draft pick saw his rookie season flash before his eyes Monday night.

Playing in the Celtics’ summer league opener against the Philadelphia 76ers, No. 3 overall pick Jaylen Brown awkwardly collided with Sixers forward James Webb. Webb lost his balance and fell directly into Brown’s right knee, causing it to buckle backward.

Luckily for Brown and the Celtics, the injury was deemed minor. He will sit out Tuesday’s game against the Utah Jazz but is expected to be back in the lineup Thursday against the San Antonio Spurs, according to Celtics assistant coach Micah Shrewsberry.

“I don’t think it’s bad,” Shrewsberry, who coaches the C’s summer league squad, told reporters Tuesday, via ESPN.com. “It’s summer league. He doesn’t need to (rush) anything like that right now. We got a lot of games still this summer. It’s kind of precautionary; just let him rest. Rest, then another day off, then he’ll be back for the next one.”

Brown showed promise in his first game in Celtics green, going just 2-for-7 from the floor but getting to the free-throw line 17 times to finish with 16 points.
