Red Sox Wrap: Boston Homers Way To 5-3 Win Vs. Yankees In New York

The Red Sox brought the Home Run Derby to New York.

Boston started the second half of the season with a bang, hitting three homers off Yankees starter Michael Pineda to earn a 5-3 win in the Bronx. Knuckleballer Steven Wright went home with a win, too, bringing his record to 11-5.

Here’s how it all went down.

The Red Sox earned all of their runs on home runs Friday. That’s not a bad way to show up for the second half of the Major League Baseball season.

IT WAS OVER WHEN …
Koji Uehara pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth.

The Yankees were close enough to come back in the final frame. Uehara made sure that didn’t happen.

ON THE BUMP
— Wright’s knuckleball was fooling the Yankees for most of the night, but things got a little dicey after the halfway point of the game. The right-hander kept New York off the board through five innings, only allowing one hit, but he gave up a three-spot in the sixth. Wright loaded the bases with only one out, and a Carlos Beltran single and a Brian McCann forceout made it 5-3.

Wright was done after the sixth, finishing the night with three runs on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts over six innings.

— Brian Ziegler relieved Wright in the seventh and made quick work of the Yankees, retiring the side on just seven pitches.

— Robbie Ross Jr. gave up a leadoff single to third baseman Chase Headley, but retired the next three batters, pitching a scoreless eighth with one strikeout.

— Uehara closed things out, and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout.

IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— There were plenty of fireworks for the Red Sox, as the team combined to hit three home runs Friday. Catcher Ryan Hanigan hit the first one — which also was the first hit of the game — in the third inning to go 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

— Travis Shaw hit a two-run shot in the fifth and went 1-for-3 with a run, two RBIs and a walk. Xander Bogaerts also blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to go 1-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

— Mookie Betts went 1-for-5 and stole a bag, too. Dustin Pedroia went 1-for-4 with a run and a walk .

— David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez both went 1-for-4.

— Brock Holt went 1-for-3 with a walk. Jackie Bradley Jr. (0-for-3) went hitless but added a run and a walk.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT
While the Red Sox were in New York, Joe Kelly was having a good night in Pawtucket.

UP NEXT
The Red Sox take on the Yankees in a 4:05 p.m. ET contest Saturday. It’ll be a battle between southpaws, as Boston will send Eduardo Rodriguez to the mound to take on CC Sabathia.
