Olympic Swimming Results: USA Dominates With Gold Medals, Records On Day 3

Day 3 of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was an excellent one for USA swimming.

The Americans took home six medals in the pool: two gold, one silver and three bronze.

Here’s a closer look at how things transpired Monday.

Men’s 200M Freestyle Final
Conor Dwyer won his first individual Olympic medal, taking home the bronze with a time of 1:45.23. He finished behind Chinese gold medalist Sun Yang (1:44.65) and just three hundredths of a second behind silver medalist Chad le Clos (1:45.20) of South Africa.

Another American, Townley Haas, finished fifth at 1:45.58.

Women’s 100M Backstroke Final
Kathleen Baker (58.75) nearly won a gold medal, but settled for a silver after Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, aka “The Iron Woman,” (58.45) just out-touched her at the conclusion of the race. China’s Fu Yuanhu and Canada’s Kylie Masse tied for bronze at 58.76.

American Olivia Smoliga finished sixth at 58.95.

Men’s 100M Backstroke Final
Ryan Murphy set an Olympic record en route to his gold medal with a time of 51.97 seconds. Fellow American David Plummer took home the bronze at 52.40 seconds, while China’s Xu Jiayu won silver at 52.31.

Women’s 100M Breaststroke Final
Lilly King backed up her smack talk, setting an Olympic record (1:04.93) en route to a gold medal and defeating Russian Yulia Efimova (1:05.50). American Katie Meili won the bronze at 1:05.69.

Other:
— Michael Phelps captivated the Internet with #PhelpsFace before defeating rival Chad le Clos and advancing to the men’s 200M butterfly final Tuesday.
— Katie Ledecky advanced to the finals of the 200M freestyle Tuesday.
— Maya DiRado and Mel Margalis advanced to the final of the 200M individual medley Tuesday.
