Patriots Practice Observations: Jonathan Jones Climbing Cornerback Depth Chart

FOXBORO, Mass. — It’s time to take Jonathan Jones seriously.

The undrafted rookie cornerback has yet to lose a one-one-one rep during padded practices, and he’s currently running with the second team as the No. 5 cornerback over veteran E.J. Biggers and 2015 seventh-round pick Darryl Roberts.

Will it hold? That remains to be seen, but Jones is showing why some analysts ranked him as high as a fourth-round pick before the 2016 NFL Draft.

Jones won battles over receivers DeAndre Carter and Devin Lucien during Wednesday’s 1-on-1s. He’s now 4 and 0 in the drill this summer.

Here are some more notes from Wednesday’s practice:

— QB Tom Brady was 6 of 11 in 11-on-11s and 15 of 26 with an interception overall on his 39th birthday.

— QB Jimmy Garoppolo was 5 of 8 in 11-on-11 work and 8 of 13 overall.

— Rookie QB Jacoby Brissett had his best practice of camp, going 5 of 6 in 11-on-11s and 8 of 12 overall.

— Brady and Garoppolo had their sloppiest practices of camp.

— Logan Ryan picked off Brady during 1-on-1 drills. He tipped the ball in the air on a throw to Chris Harper then snagged it out of the air. Ryan worked mostly in the slot during team drills as the Patriots worked in Justin Coleman as the outside No. 2 corner.

— Cyrus Jones recorded a pass breakup during 11-on-11s. He would have been called for pass interference on an incompletion earlier in 11s work.

— Guard Shaq Mason, who started 10 games as a rookie, returned to team drills but worked with the second unit at left guard. Rookie Joe Thuney remained at left guard while Josh Kline manned right guard.

— Rookie tight end Bryce Williams, who’s been a standout, hurt his left knee and didn’t finish practice.

— Rookie wideout Malcolm Mitchell continues to shine. His highlight play of the day was a back shoulder reception over Biggers.

— Mitchell, wide receiver Aaron Dobson, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett and running backs LeGarrette Blount and James White worked on deep routes with the quarterbacks during special teams drills.

— Bennett was heavily involved, catching four passes during Brady’s two-minute drill at the end of practice.
