Jered Weaver Almost Killed A Dragonfly; Its Narrow Escape Is Mesmerizing

Jered Weaver normally isn’t confused with Randy Johnson, but that almost changed Monday afternoon in Oakland.

Weaver, the Angels’ soft-tossing veteran pitcher, came centimeters from crushing a dragonfly with this off-speed pitch captured by MLB.com’s Cut4.

The dragonfly escaped unscatched, unlike the poor bird Johnson pelted with one of his legendary fastballs during a 2001 spring training game. Maybe things would’ve been different for the dragonfly if the pitcher wasn’t Weaver, who has lost pitch velocity over the year and now tops out at just 86 mph.

The dragonfly also fared much better than Weaver, who was knocked out after just four innings Monday, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks. His Angels beat the A’s 10-7, though.
