David Ross Should Get An Assist On Anthony Rizzo’s Wild Circus Catch

The Chicago Cubs might need a little luck if they want to climb out of their 3-1 World Series deficit. Sunday night certainly was a good start.

In the second inning of Chicago’s Game 5 matchup against the Cleveland Indians at Wrigley Field, Carlos Santana hit a pop fly in foul territory on the first base side. Cubs catcher David Ross and first baseman Anthony Rizzo both gave chase, but Ross got there first and looked ready to make the catch.

That’s when things got wacky.

The ball bounced off Ross’ glove but somehow caromed right to Rizzo, who secured the catch after a bit of juggling for the wild out. That’s a 2-3 pop out for those scoring at home.

What’s even crazier is that almost an identical play happened in the World Series 36 years ago. In the 1980 Fall Classic, it was the Philadelphia Phillies’ Pete Rose bailing out teammate Bob Boone.

Pretty nuts, right? Check back in the 2052 World Series when this play happens again.
