Clock Screw-Up Saves Michigan State From Upset Loss To Florida Gulf Coast

Michigan State was saved by the bell, literally, on Sunday as a clock malfunction helped prevent the Spartans from suffering an early season upset loss to Florida Gulf Coast.

After making a nice defensive play on a full-court inbound pass to take the game clock to 1.6 seconds, FCGU threw a full-court pass for a last-second shot. That’s plenty enough time for someone to catch and shoot, but the clock started before Antravious Simmons grabbed the ball.

It would have been a tough shot for Simmons regardless, but the buzzer sounding prematurely probably threw him off a little bit as his attempt hit off the rim.

Michigan State’s 78-77 win brought its record to 2-2, although it fell from 13th to 24th in the Associated Press men’s basketball poll released Monday.
