Are you of the belief that four NFL preseason games is too many?
Well, you may not be the only one, but it doesn't seem like change is imminent.
NFL owners met with commissioner Roger Goodell on a conference call Wednesday and addressed a number of topics such as implementing a 17th game to the 2021 schedule and shortening the preseason.
Owners delayed decisions on both, according to ESPN. But in regards to the shortened preseason, it was a group of owners like New England Patriots' Robert Kraft and Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones who reportedly were against it.
Here's an excerpt from a story published by ESPN on Wednesday:
During the meeting, the issue of the preseason was raised, with the discussion centering on whether there should be a reduction in games. Sources told ESPN's Seth Wickersham that Goodell seemed in favor of shortening the preseason from four games to two but that a group of powerful owners -- New England's Robert Kraft, Dallas' Jerry Jones, the New York Giants' John Mara and Pittsburgh's Art Rooney II -- dismissed the idea. Owners argued that a reduction to three preseason games might work but not two. No vote was taken, and the schedule remained unchanged.
The 2020 preseason, you may remember, was completely eliminated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There's a chance that owners like Kraft and Jones would like to keep the four-game preseason for the 2021 season in order to supplement the revenue they lost from this year's cancellation.
Things could always change, of course, but don't count on it coming before 2021.
