Could Red Sox Trade Deadline Moves Expedite Prospect Promotions?

BOSTON — The Red Sox took a step in a new trade deadline direction compared to recent years. First-year chief baseball officer Craig Breslow dipped into his prospect pool to acquire helpful pieces at the big-league level.

With several prospects that had been with Triple-A Worcester such as Nick Yorke, Niko Kavadas and Matthew Lugo being moved in trades, the Red Sox may now just have room and more reason to allow some of their top prospects to make the jump to being a step away from the big leagues.

Will that be the case soon for Boston’s farm system?

“I have no idea who you might be talking about,” Breslow joked with reporters at Fenway Park.

To be clear, just in case, that’s clearly in reference to Boston’s top prospect trio in Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel. All three players have spent significant time at Double-A Portland in parts of the last calendar year.

All three have shown the ability to improve and develop with Mayer and Teel likely having been ready for Triple-A over the last few weeks.

With the extra room in the system, Breslow did seem partially motivated to address that possibility in the near future.

“We’ve talked about promotions being driven by appreciating where the best development environment is for any individual player,” Breslow said. “You kind of take a fresh look at that every week. That’s something top of mind. We have a number of really talented players that we will have a conversation about as soon as Monday.”
