How Jazz Chisholm Trade Has Created Some Yankees Drama

The Yankees recently acquired Jazz Chisholm from the Miami Marlins, a player who comes with a reputation for having a little baggage. Early in his New York tenure, though, it seems one of his new teammates might be the bigger problem in that regard.

Chisholm made his Yankees debut Sunday night in the Bombers’ series-clinching win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. He started in center field, but he indirectly pushed back against his reputation by saying he’s willing to play wherever the Yankees need him — including a move to third base.

Gleyber Torres, meanwhile, isn’t taking the same approach when it comes to potentially moving off second base, a position Chisholm knows well. Asked about his own chances of moving to the hot corner, Torres made his opinion clear.

“I’m a second baseman, so I play second,” Torres told reporters Sunday, per ESPN.com.

Torres does have experience at the position, albeit in a minimal capacity, and has never done so at the big league level. He made it clear he “(doesn’t) like” the idea of playing third base, either.

One slight issue: Torres isn’t a very good second baseman. He made an ill-timed error Sunday night that didn’t come back to hurt the Yankees. However, as noted by NJ.com’s Max Goodman, that blunder was the 57th error committed by Torres at second base since 2018. No second baseman has committed more.

Regardless, the Yankees have a positional issue on their hands. They have a logjam in the outfield, and they haven’t got much out of third base all season. For the moment, Chisholm — who hasn’t played a single inning of third base in his career — is listed as a third baseman on the Yankees’ roster.

How it all plays out remains to be seen, but it’s pretty clear how Torres believes it should.
