Boston Red Sox top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel didn't have their usual assignments with Double-A Portland on Saturday.
Instead, the star duo showcased their high-end skill sets against other elite prospects in the MLB All-Star Futures Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Teel ended up putting together a better performance at the plate than Mayer, who played in the premier exhibition contest for a second straight season. According to the Boston Globe's Alex Speier, Teel was the only player in the game to record multiple hits as he collected two doubles. Mayer grounded out twice in his two at-bats.
Just a year ago, Teel was drafted out of the University of Virginia by the Red Sox with the No. 14 overall pick. It didn't take long for the athletic, 22-year-old catcher to announce his presence as he played at three different levels in Boston's minor league system in 2023.

Teel started where he left off last season by putting together a tremendous first half with Portland. The left-handed hitter batted .298 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs with six stolen bases in 65 games.

Mayer has been just as impressive this season after having his 2023 campaign come to a premature end due to a shoulder injury. The 21-year-old shortstop leads the Eastern League in hitting with a .301 batting average -- Teel is second -- and is also tops in doubles with 26. Mayer posted seven homers and 36 RBIs in 71 games, too.
The two have positioned themselves well to get a called up to Triple-A Worcester at some point in the second half of the season.
MLB Pipeline has Mayer ranked as Boston's No. 1 prospect with Teel closely behind him at No. 3.

The No. 2 prospect on that list is their Portland teammate Roman Anthony. The 20-year-old outfielder joined Mayer and Teel for the event as he competed in the Futures Game Skills Showcase following the contest.
