FOXBORO, Mass. -- New England Patriots first-year offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt clearly has been impressed with rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

But when reflecting on Maye's progress since the start of training camp, one aspect of Maye's summer has stood out as the most notable to Van Pelt.

"He’s taking steps forward every single day," Van Pelt said before practice at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. "That’s the biggest thing, there’s no regression. He's taking things from the previous practice and applying them to the next practice. He’s been really impressive, the last few weeks especially."

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo and teammates have said they've seen Maye turn a corner since last week against the Philadelphia Eagles. Maye, who fared well against the Eagles in practice when not under the threat of a pass rush, was at his best during the preseason game.

"He made a big jump last week through the game and practice," said Van Pelt, referencing footwork and timing as areas of eye-catching improvement.

Van Pelt said the Patriots want to get Maye more reps behind the starting offensive line. Maye received three competitive snaps behind that group Wednesday and saw another six behind David Andrews and company Thursday.

"Jacoby," Van Pelt responded when asked why the Patriots haven't given Maye more work with the first-string offensive line. "Right now, he's our starter."

Both Mayo and Van Pelt have kept the door open on Maye overtaking Brissett for the starting job. Van Pelt on Thursday said he was "sure" there was a chance for the "pushing" Maye.
