The New England Patriots entered their final preseason game on Sunday night against the Washington Commanders still undecided about who the Week 1 starting quarterback would be on Sept. 8.

First-year head coach Jerod Mayo didn't sway regarding the quarterback competition despite Drake Maye leading the Patriots down the field 88 yards for the game's opening score.

"I would say Drake took the ball down the field. You take away some of those bad snaps, and it probably looks a lot better," Mayo told NBC's Melissa Stark on the Sunday Night Football broadcast. "Jacoby (Brissett) went out there the first series, also made a conversion. We'll see how it plays out."

Brissett only lasted one drive and seven plays before exiting the game with a shoulder injury sustained during New England's opening drive.

After witnessing Maye go five-for-six for 71 yards and a 17-yard scramble for a first down on third-and-14, Patriots fans flocked to social media to express their choice for New England's Week 1 starter.

But for every post stating Maye is ready to start for the Patriots, fans also begged New England to fix the offensive line before the rookie takes the reigns.

Mayo and company will have a big decision to make before the Patriots travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals on Sept. 8. Do you think New England should gamble with Maye or let the rookie learn from Brissett this season? Sound off in the comments below.
