How Patriots’ Davon Godchaux Reacted After Contract Extension

Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux finally inked a two-year contract extension on Wednesday after frustrations boiled over in June.

"It feels good, but back to football," Godchaux told reporters after Day 7 of Patriots training camp at Gillette Stadium on Thursday, per team-provided video. "All the stresses, you know, I was stressing. I ain't gonna lie because you just hate to be put in the middle of it."

Godchaux continued: "You really just want to focus on football. Yeah, it's good to be back. It's good to be back. It's good to be out here with my brothers making plays and getting it right for the 2024 season."

After training camp practice last Friday, Godchaux said he was going to leave the contracts talk up to the Patriots and his agent Drew Rosenhaus to hash out the details but ultimately gave a lot of credit to his wife.

"My wife made me realize something. 'Every time you're not going to always get what you want but always be grateful for it,'" Godchaux said. "I'm grateful for her words, and I'm grateful for my agent working it out with the Patriots, Eliot Wolf and Matt Groh. I'm glad we got something done."

With the deal in the rearview mirror, Godchaux said he is ready to focus on the upcoming Patriots' season.

"Back to football," he said. "I don't have to worry about my agent giving me a call saying, 'Hey, I talked to Matt Groh and Eliot Wolf.' I'm glad we got it figured out and ready to get back to football."

Godchaux started all 17 games for the Patriots last season, tallying 56 tackles along with two for a loss and a fumble recovery. Head coach Jerod Mayo expressed his gratitude that the two sides were able to reach a deal.

"The thing about Godchaux is he's a huge piece of what we do," Mayo told reporters in his Thursday press conference. " Look, it's never a ... well, at least for me, it's never been just a clean process of, 'Alright, you want a deal? Here's a deal. Alright, we're done.' So this was a little bit more extensive, but I'm happy to have him here."
