Boston designated Jamie Westbrook for assignment
The Red Sox made multiple roster moves before their series against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park.
Boston announced in a press release that Brayan Bello was reinstated from the paternity list. Left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn was recalled from Triple-A Worcester. Right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart and catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper were selected from Worcester. James Paxton was placed on the 15-day injured list. Pitchers Brennan Bernardino and Brad Keller were optioned to the WooSox after Sunday’s loss to the Houston Astros. And utility man Jamie Westbrook was designated for assignment.
The moves came after Jarren Duran was issued a non-paid two-game suspension, and because the suspension was made by the Red Sox, they are allowed to add another player to the active roster.
Paxton suffered a right calf strain after throwing just five pitches during his start Sunday.
Westbrook debuted in MLB this season and made a memorable impression in June. He hit two home runs and recorded seven RBIs in 21 games this season.
Horn pitched nine games for the Red Sox this season. He recorded a 6.39 ERA in 12 2/3 innings this season. The 26-year-old was acquired from the Chicago White Sox on April 30 and owns a 1.74 ERA in 20 2/3 innings in Triple-A Worcester.
Shugart pitched 29 games with the WooSox recording a 4.98 ERA in 59 2/3 innings. He has a 4-2 record in five starts with one save.
Gasper commands a .401 batting average with a 1.017 OPS, eight home runs and 32 RBIs in 40 games this season with Triple-A Worcester. The 28-year-old earned International League Player of the Week honors Monday. He originally was a 27th-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees before he was selected by Boston in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.
Bernardino opened up about his demotion to Triple-A Worcester following Sunday’s loss. Keller has a 5.30 ERA in 37 1/3 innings and was signed as a free agent last offseason.
