Ex-Celtics Guard Reportedly Signs With CBA’s Shanghai Sharks

It's been two years since the last time former Boston Celtics two-way guard Tremont Waters last suited up for an NBA team -- the Washington Wizards -- but the 26-year-old isn't walking away from professional basketball just yet.

Waters, who the Celtics selected in the second round (51st overall) of the 2019 draft, signed a contract with the Shanghai Sharks of the CBA, per Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype, following a run at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Waters was one of few NBA-experienced talents on Team Puerto Rico's roster, joining New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado, and Waters scored 18 points during his debut performance against South Sudan.

The 5-foot-10 LSU product finished an impressive two-year collegiate career averaging 15.6 points with 5.9 rebounds and 2.9 steals, shooting 42.3% from the field and 34% from 3-point territory for the Tigers. Waters recorded his best performance for LSU during his freshman season, scoring 39 points in the Maui Invitational against Marquette -- three points shy of breaking Adam Morrison's 43-point tournament record with Gonzaga, which was set in 2005.

Arriving to a talented Celtics roster alongside fellow 2019 prospects Romeo Langford, Carsen Edwards and Grant Williams, Waters struggled to perform behind Kemba Walker and Brad Wannamaker. That inability to pan out and adapt to NBA basketball led to Waters' departure from Boston following the 2020-21 season, after averaging 3.8 points on 36.1% shooting from the field and 30.6% shooting from three across two seasons, which didn't encourage many teams across the league to put legitimate faith in the undersized youngster.

Waters will strive toward an NBA return, with his youth working to his advantage, now as a member of the one-time CBA champion Sharks.
