Many thought it might take Jerod Mayo a while to earn his first win as head coach of the New England Patriots.

Well, it only took the former linebacker one game into his tenure.

Mayo and the Patriots kicked off their 2024 regular season with an upset road win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The Week 1 contest featured a great coaching performance from Mayo, who brilliantly managed the clock and put together an effective game plan for a highly skilled opponent.

It was an effort Bill Belichick probably admired, and "The Greg Hill Show" couldn't help but wonder if Mayo heard from his predecessor after his first win as an NFL head coach. The 38-year-old didn't take the bait, though.

"I'm not going to get into that," Mayo told WEEI.

We do know Mayo heard from another pillar of the Patriots franchise after the victory at Paycor Stadium. Franchise owner Robert Kraft addressed the team in the locker room and gave a game ball to Mayo, who acknowledged it was "very special" to receive such an honor.

But as Mayo stressed Sunday, the celebrations for the Week 1 win were short-lived. New England is onto the next challenge, which awaits Sunday when the Seattle Seahawks visit Gillette Stadium.
