Jordan Love Injury Opens Door For Mac Jones To Packers

Green Bay could be desperate enough to make a win-now move

The Packers’ Super Bowl hopes could be in jeopardy, and it could force them to make a drastic move.

Jordan Love suffered a serious-looking injury in the final moments of Green Bay’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. Head coach Matt LaFleur didn’t have an update after his team’s loss, but the video of the hit his signal-caller took doesn’t present an optimistic outlook.

Malik Willis was the backup and took two snaps Friday. The only other quarterback the Packers have on their roster is Sean Clifford, who is on the practice squad. The duo have a combined 13 games of experience, including two starts. Willis came into the 2022 NFL Draft with a lot of hype, but he’s yet to realize his potential in the NFL. Clifford had a fine career at Penn State but wasn’t a highly-touted prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Neither quarterback inspires confidence, and with high expectations for this season, Green Bay could try to look outside of Wisconsin for a short-term solution. Mac Jones could be the answer.

Jones was a disaster in his final season with the New England Patriots, but he looked rejuvenated in the preseason with the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s a small sample size against inferior competition, but offensive minds like Doug Pederson or LaFleur might get the best out of Jones that Matt Patricia and Joe Judge weren’t able to.

It’s unknown what Jacksonville would want in a potential trade nor is it known how much Green Bay is willing to give up. The only other potential option at a cheap price would be Andy Dalton (Carolina Panthers) or Ryan Tannehill (free agent).

The Jaguars obviously brought in Jones to be a premium backup for Trevor Lawrence in case he also suffers an injury like Love did. But if Green Bay is desperate enough, Jones could find his way to another team and achieve his goal of starting in the NFL.
