      UPDATE (2:49 P.M. ET):
Bentley was been downgraded to out following halftime. As was Oshane Ximines, who left with a knee injury.

      ORIGINAL STORY (1:48 P.M.):
FOXBORO, Mass. -- The Patriots defense was dealt quite the blow Sunday.

Ja'Whaun Bentley was forced to leave New England's matchup with the Seattle Seahawks after suffering a shoulder injury in the first quarter of the season's opening game at Gillette Stadium.

Bentley is usually the primary signal-caller on defense, but coincidentally enough, it was Kyle Dugger who was chosen to take that role Sunday. New England didn't have to make much of a change on that front, though Raekwon McMillan did take over in the middle of the defense for the three-time captain.

The Patriots immediately gave up a touchdown on the drive following Bentley's injury, though the score stemmed from a couple of lapses in the secondary that allowed the Seahawks to punch on in from the 1-yard line.

Bentley was initially listed as questionable to return.
