Red Sox Wrap: Mets Take Advantage Of Extra Outs, Best Boston

The Boston Red Sox began a three-game series against the New York Mets with a 4-1 loss on Monday night at Citi Field.

With the loss, Boston falls to 70-68 while New York improves to 74-64.

ONE BIG TAKEAWAY
Boston's failed to have both the offense and the pitching "click" together in recent weeks. That offered more of the same on Monday night in the Big Apple.

Brayan Bello had solid stuff and attacked hitters, though the Mets capitalized on their chances against the Red Sox starter. Boston made a pair of errors and New York cashed in on the extra outs to stack four runs against Bello through five innings. Bello struck out four Mets while walking just one through five innings of work.

On the other side, the Mets got a strong start from Luis Severino, a former AL East foe who's gone through his share of ups and downs with New York this season. The ex-Yankee rose to the occasion against the Red Sox, allowing just one earned run in seven innings. Boston had a cash in with two runners on in the sixth inning before outfielder Brandon Nimmo robbed Rafael Devers of a run-scoring hit with a diving catch.

The same scenario presented itself in the eighth inning. This time, Mets reliever Danny Young got Devers to roll over to second base and end the frame as the potential tying run for the Red Sox.
