Jacoby Brissett is an admired veteran in the Patriots locker room. He wouldn't have been named a team captain if he wasn't.
But the journeyman quarterback probably earned even more respect from his New England teammates Thursday night.
The Patriots' Week 3 matchup with the Jets was a disaster for the visitors' offense, as New England didn't come close to containing New York's pass rush. Brissett was sacked five times at MetLife Stadium and took a series of other huge hits in the Patriots' unsightly 24-3 loss to their longtime rival.
Jerod Mayo and company eventually got Brissett out of harm's way by replacing him with Drake Maye, who saluted New England's starting signal-caller for his impressive display of toughness.

"It speaks volumes," Maye told reporters Thursday night, per ESPN. "I told him on the sideline, 'That's the way to represent quarterbacks out there.'"
Maye also was a victim of the Patriots' porous offensive line, as he took two sacks on his lone drive late in the fourth quarter. The highly touted rookie took ownership of those negative plays, though, calling them "stupid" decisions on his part.
Sacks could be surrendered by the Patriots in abundance again in Week 4. New England will be hard-pressed to protect its quarterback next Sunday when it visits Nick Bosa and the San Francisco 49ers.
