The Yankees on Wednesday night looked well on their way to extending the 2024 World Series.
Fresh of a lopsided Game 4 win in the Bronx, New York took a commanding 5-0 lead into the fifth inning of Game 5. But that was where the wheels fell off for the Yankees, who watched the Los Angeles Dodgers tie the game in the fifth, take the lead in the eighth and ultimately win the Fall Classic at Yankee Stadium.
It was a brutal way for New York to end its season, and Alex Rodriguez didn’t mince words when he spoke about his former team’s collapse.
“This is one of the greatest meltdowns that I’ve ever seen in 40 years,” Rodriguez said on FOX after the Yankees’ 7-6 loss.
Of course, the criticism was a bit ironic coming from the former superstar third baseman, a key member of the 2004 New York team that blew a 3-0 lead in the American League Championship Series against the rival Boston Red Sox.

But A-Rod wasn’t wrong. The Yankees blew a golden opportunity to turn the tides on baseball’s biggest stage, and they will be forced to think about their missed chance all offseason.
