Alex Verdugo had some great years with the Boston Red Sox, which included a deep 2021 playoff run and a season in which he received some American League MVP votes.

However, those campaigns didn’t stack up to the veteran outfielder’s first go-around with the Yankees.

“Honestly, it’s been awesome. Man, it’s been really cool,” Verdugo told reporters before World Series Game 5, per the New York Post. “We kind of grinded through some things. But as far as teammates and being with the guys, it’s been my favorite team I’ve ever played for. I really did enjoy it.”

Verdugo made that claim despite having a career-worst season at the plate in which he logged a lowly .233 batting average. There also were plenty of calls for the outspoken outfielder to lose his starting job to 21-year-old up-and-comer Jasson Domínguez.

A trip to the Fall Classic surely helped make it easier for Verdugo to put those shortcomings behind him. The Bronx Bombers didn’t reach the mountaintop, though, and it was the former Dodgers second-round pick who made the last out of Los Angeles’ title-clinching victory Wednesday night.

Now, Verdugo will head to the open market for the first time in his career. And Red Sox fans might end up seeing plenty more of the 28-year-old, who “would like to come back” to the Yankees.
