Jeremy Swayman agreeing to a new contract just days before the start of the regular season was a welcomed sight for the Boston Bruins.
The terms of Swayman’s deal didn’t go unnoticed by his teammates, either. Swayman became one of the NHL’s highest-paid goalies by inking an eight-year, $66 million contract.
That type of monetary value allowed Bruins captain Brad Marchand to tease Swayman when he was asked by TNT’s Paul Bissonnette prior to Boston’s win over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday if Swayman was kicked out of the team’s group chat while he handled his contract dispute.
“No, we’re just finding every day that goes by the pricier restaurants keep getting added to the list,” Marchand said. “He’s got a few team dinners he’s going to be buying this year.”
Marchand’s good-natured ribbing didn’t stop there, though. He also poked fun at Swayman for his guitar-playing capabilities, which was captured in Amazon Prime’s docuseries “Faceoff: Inside the NHL.”

“Listen, he is making sure that everyone in the world knows that he can play the guitar,” Marchand said. “He’s pushing that. I think he’s looking for a retirement plan.”
Retirement surely is a long ways off for Swayman at the moment as he’ll have to stick to playing the guitar in his spare time. The 25-year-old is off to a 2-1-0 start this season with a 2.98 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage.
He’ll likely be back between the pipes Saturday night against the Utah Hockey Club after Joonas Korpisalo got the start against the Avalanche. Puck drop for Boston’s first-ever game against Utah at the Delta Center is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET, and you can watch the game, plus an hour of pregame coverage, on NESN.
