The Chiefs looked to bolster their wide receiver group before the NFL trade deadline, and they did so Wednesday when they reportedly acquired DeAndre Hopkins.
But before the five-time Pro Bowl selection was brought to Kansas City, the reigning Super Bowl champions reportedly thought about making an even bigger splash in the pass-catcher pool.
“The Rams and the Chiefs discussed Cooper Kupp, but the Super Bowl champs needed to trade with a team that was willing to take on a large chunk of the salary and didn’t want to give up high picks,” The Athletic’s Dianna Russini posted to X. “Tennessee is the team willing to play ball.”
Kupp might no longer be the player he was in 2021 when he caught 145 passes for 1,947 yards with 16 touchdowns. The 31-year-old has been limited to 23 games since the start of the 2022 campaign due to a variety of injuries. But if any folks could maximize Kupp’s current abilities, it’s Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. Kupp arguably would have been the most talented receiver Mahomes had in his arsenal since Tyreek Hill left KC.
The Super Bowl LVI MVP recently acknowledged he’s “aware” of the lingering trade rumors. The Rams, who entered Week 8 with a 2-4 record, will have until Nov. 5 to make a decision about Kupp’s future in Los Angeles.
