Jerod Mayo believes it was best for both the New England Patriots and Joshua Uche to go their separate ways.

The Patriots on Monday traded Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

Mayo weighed in on the personnel move made by executive vice president Eliot Wolf and company.

“Josh is one of the first guys that I spent a lot of time watching a lot of film when he was in college,” Mayo told reporters at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, per a team-provided video. “We still have a great relationship. I think it’s better for both of us, and I wish him nothing but the best. But I think it’s best for both teams.”

A 2020 second-round pick, Uche re-signed with the Patriots last offseason on a one-year deal. He felt “destined” to be a Patriot and opted for a New England return despite the fact he had better offers.

Uche, however, saw a noticeable decline in snaps. He played 35% or more of defensive snaps in just two games this season. Uche’s pass-rushing prowess wasn’t called on as much given New England’s defense frequently got gashed on the ground and trailed opponents in games.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid believes the Michigan product will be a great addition while Bill Belichick credited Kansas City for giving up nothing to get Uche.
